Former President Alberto Fernández Charged with Gender Violence

Federal Judge Julián Ercolini has charged former Argentine President Alberto Fernández with gender violence against his ex-partner Fabiola Yáñez, involving serious allegations and a prohibition on contact.

Former Argentine president Alberto Fernández (2019-2023) was prosecuted for macho violence against his ex-partner Fabiola Yáñez, according to a decision made by federal judge Julián Ercolini. After an extensive investigation, in which Yáñez and more than ten witnesses testified, the judge accused Fernández as legally responsible for minor and serious injury crimes, aggravated by occurring in a context of gender-based violence and against his ex-partner, as well as coercive threats.

The judge also ordered the seizure of the former president's assets worth 10 million pesos and maintained the prohibition of Fernández approaching his ex-partner to less than 500 meters, as well as any form of contact with her. However, he lifted the prohibition on leaving the country imposed last August.

In his ruling, Ercolini mentions that there is evidence of the habitual and ongoing violence that Fernández allegedly exercised against Yáñez, including psychological violence in various forms such as harassment, intimidation, insults, and derogatory treatment. Two weeks before this resolution, the former president had denied exercising violence against his ex-partner during his interrogatory statement.

Yáñez's complaint dates back to July 2024, after conversations and images were found on the phone of Fernández's secretary that could indicate the commission of minor injuries in a context of gender-based violence.
